
Hartley
Nestled in Duluth’s Woodland neighborhood, Hartley Park spans 660 acres of diverse landscapes, offering a serene escape into nature just minutes from the city center. Once the site of Allendale Farms, the land transitioned to park status in 1941, preserving its rich history and natural beauty.
The park boasts over 10 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, and cross-country skiing. These trails meander through dense forests, past wetlands, and alongside Hartley Pond, which is fed by Tischer Creek. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with sightings of species like cedar waxwings and red-breasted nuthatches .


Hawk Ridge
Hawk Ridge, located in Duluth, Minnesota, is renowned as one of North America’s premier sites for observing the autumn raptor migration. Situated along the eastern portion of Skyline Parkway, this 235-acre nature reserve offers breathtaking views of Lake Superior and serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds of prey. Established in 1972 with support from the Duluth Audubon Society, Hawk Ridge has become a hub for both amateur and professional birdwatchers.
Each fall, thousands of visitors gather to witness the migration of species such as sharp-shinned hawks, bald eagles, and the occasional gyrfalcon. Managed by the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory under a trust agreement with the City of Duluth, the reserve is open year-round. It features over four miles of hiking trails, providing opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
Brewer Park
Located in West Duluth, Brewer Park spans 168 acres and offers a diverse array of recreational opportunities. Established in 1926 through a donation from Frank Brewer of Duluth Crushed Stone, the park has evolved into a hub for outdoor activities. It features over five miles of mountain biking trails, rock climbing and bouldering spots, and cross-country skiing routes.
A segment of the Superior Hiking Trail also meanders through the park, providing hikers with scenic views of the city and the St. Louis River . The park’s varied terrain includes aspen and maple forests, offering a mix of steep and flat sections suitable for all skill levels. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or enjoying a winter outing, Brewer Park provides a welcoming environment for outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
