Let me just say this up front: if you’re ever in Duluth, Minnesota, and don’t make time for a hike at Enger Park, you’re missing out on something seriously magical. I’m 35, I’ve hiked all over the U.S.—from the Pacific Northwest to the Smokies—and Enger Park still holds its own as one of my favorite quick-hit trails. It’s got that sweet blend of natural beauty, rich history, and killer views that checks every box on my outdoor bucket list.

The Start of the Adventure
I hit the trail around 7:30 a.m., coffee in hand and boots on point. The air was crisp with that clean, pine-scented northern Minnesota vibe that instantly wakes up your lungs. The climb from the base up toward the iconic Enger Tower is short but invigorating, just enough incline to get your blood pumping, but not so much that you’re cursing your breakfast choices.
You’ll pass through a mix of pine forest, wildflowers (depending on the season), and open spaces where you can catch your first glimpses of Lake Superior. Yes, that Lake Superior, so big it looks like the ocean, and so blue it could be a filter.
Enger Tower: Worth Every Step
The trail naturally leads you up to the stone Enger Tower, built in the 1930s and standing proud at the park’s highest point. It’s a legit castle tower that you can actually climb, and once you’re at the top, WOW. Full 360-degree views of Duluth, the harbor, the Lift Bridge, and endless blue water. I don’t care how many lookout points you’ve seen before, this one sticks with you.
Pro tip: bring a light snack or a thermos of coffee and chill up there for a bit. Sunrise or sunset? Even better.
